If you are starting out on a vacation some 600 miles of driving to get to your destination, you’ll probably get out a road map to get the lay of the land in mind and to decide where you want to rest and eat.
When you start out to understand the Old Testament, you also need a road map or an overview. My Old Testament series presents an overview of the entire Old Testament including its geography, people, places, history and literature. Its it very helpful to get the lay of the land with an overview of the Old Testament.
Understanding the Old Testament takes a combination of three things:
- Know the importance of the Old Testament as the Word of God:
a) Food for the Soul (Deuteronomy 8:3; Job 23:12; Psalms 119:103; Jeremiah 15:16)
b) Power (Jeremiah 23:29)
c) Life giving force (Ezekiel 37:7)
d) Light in darkness (Psalm 19:8; Psalm 119:105; Psalm 119:130; Proverbs 6:23; 2 Peter 1:19)
- Know the big picture. Read the Bible through without rushing. Pray and ponder.
- Know your way around the Old Testament. Get a good single volume Commentary, Bible Altas, Bible Dictionary and Concordance as study tools to help you better understand the Old Testament.
In addition to these three elements you will need these important active steps of humility, patience, and discipline that most approaches miss in understanding the Old Testament.
